Loco!
It has been pure loco here lately. David Lynch came for the weekend to talk to a bunch of people who came to hear him talk about creativity and whatnot. Dr. John Hagelin talked as well. AND rockstar DONOVAN performed several times. I admit that I had not even heard of this guy until a couple weeks ago, even though I have inadvertently heard some of his most well-known songs--Mellow Yellow to be exact. It's crazy how much music is out there that I have no idea about. The only person I think that might actually be up-to-date on everything is Grey McMurray--that fool is freaking on point. Anyways, DONOVAN was amazing. Such a performer, plus he had some great stories about his life and the times he spent with the Rish--the Maharish(i) that is.
I stepped out of the building today, get on my motorbike (50cc), and the sky lights up for 3 seconds straight with fork lightning. Imagine that!

Weekend
It has been a good weekend. Laid back yet full of activity. I just got back from a Sunday night dinner with friends where I ate some phenomenal Italian food--that which ranks up there with Ma Chiavaro's raviolis and the family trip to Firenze, Italy. Good times.
David Lynch is coming to Fairf next weekend for a festival of consciousness at the university which will happen to hold about a thousand people, so I've been getting together a band for that occasion, as well as a future concert. We are playing Aretha Franklin's Rocksteady which has a severe James Brown-type groove. Tommorrow starts the new block called "Constitution of the Universe". I am not sure of the course specifics yet but I'm sure it has something to do with the title. Hmmmm.
I'm about to watch the surf movie--The Craving--that contains my cousin Heather's movie debut. Goodnight.

Monday Night

Ok, I know my blogs haven't been the best lately--I'm sorry for that. Actually, to tell you the truth, they crack me up, but I can see how someone might say that they have been a bit sparse and/or outdated. Whatever.
I just saw my favorite movie of all time two nights ago--COMMANDO--starring my home state's commander and chief, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Alyssa Milano. This movie gets a B rating at best but I think Arnold should have won an Oscar for his performance. "Why don't they just call him Girl George," asks Colonel Matrix with 80s half-mullet to his 13 year old daughter, "it would cut out all the confusion." Brilliant. I cry every time.
It is Monday, the last week of my Ayur-Vedic Self-Pulse Class, and here comes a 3 day weekend. I'm stoked. I don't know what I will do but I will let you know. I'm watching Last Samurai.

It's ok! My cell phone is back!

I found the cell phone! You can all start calling me again! HA HA! IT's so hilarious--once you finaly give up on finding something, that is when you find it. This is a law a nature, I am convinced.
I saw Renee Fleming last night in Iowa City, the NYC of the Iowa. She is a master. Absolutley perfect.
I'm going to bed.

My Cell Phone Walked Out on Me

I can't find my phone. We've all done it at least twice and, when bad, it's usually gone for at least a day, maybe two. It's been about 4 days and I'm scared. I think it's on the side of the road or something, lying there, saturated from today's cold rain, battery long dead. I hope not. It better not. It would be great if it were in a part of my backback that I have happened to overlook the 10 times that I have already tried, but alas, this is not the way the world works. It'll be back. It always does.

No More Mayo for Me

I used to be into it. Mayo goes well on sandwiches and tuna casseroles or, if you are french, you can use it to eat french fries. I used to be totally into it. And then came that fateful question: "Does this smell good to you?" I asked my friend Levi as I pass him the Mayo, the next key ingredient for my tuna melt quesadilla. "It's PRETTY old, but it smells alright." Looking back on that moment, where the age-old "has that dairy product gone bad, or can we get another day on it" dilemma reared its ugly head, I do confess that it smelt a bit tangy. But, the draw of the impending quesadilla was too great. My my ability to discriminate between good and bad mayonnaise had been overshadowed. Sure, it tasted great--the BBQ sauce made it even more epic--but then came the morning after, when each of the people who had partaken of the delight had a proportionate amount of stomach upset according to the amount of mayonnaise taken. Two days in, I still have food poisoning. No more mayo for me.

Living the dream
Last night, I played in Iowa City with a band named Bambu. I played percussion (i.e. timbales, congas, bongos, cabasa, tambourine, shakers and Tibetan jewelry). It was fun.

I am taking a two-week class about this.

AND, this guy, Peck Euwer--shown here post-Maverick's shark attack on February 29th, 2000--just premiered a movie in Santa Barbara on Monday, entitled "The Craving", which had the surfing debut of my cousin Heather as well as the music of Rude Jackson.
I haven't seen it yet, but I can't wait. In the film, all of Heather's surfing is backed by RJ's "Softcore (Beach Song)".

James Brown. Legend.

I started playing James Brown Grooves again. This time, I pulled out the bass guitar and put down the lines as best as I could. My favorite of the day is Funky Drummer. It is the most popular groove to be sampled by hip-hop artists in all of history, which basically goes back to the 80s when hip-hop began. My favorites from the weekend are "Funky Women" and "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing". These grooves are so nasty, that they make my face look like I just smelled something really bad.

This is the wonderful book that helped me learn of the nuances of the JB Rhythm sections. Stories, bass lines, wah-wah patterns, pictures and more! BUT . . .

. . . you won't find this guy, who is also named James Brown. How do I know? I don't, but his name came up in Google images on the second page.

Here is JB getting his mug taken.

Danny Glover was in my dream last night!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about you, but this just blows my mind. I haven't thought about Danny Glover for at least a year and BOOM--there he is in my dream playing drums with me. Weird but...ok, no buts--just really weird! What really hit me the hardest about DG was the depressing saxophone theme that is played in Lethal Weapon. Check it out.

Cali 2

So, the second week in California was different than the first. Not as many movies--more California. THE SURF WAS UP!!! It was pretty much consistent for three weeks straight, in which I was able to take advantage of two of them. Good enough. I re-realized that I am in love with California and more importantly--surfing. The funniest thing is the lingo that I develop out of necessity. By this I mean survival in the line-up. I was able to have access to a secret spot that was run by crazy, control-freak locals. The only way to be accepted was to smile my smile, and respond to the wonderful language of the surfer; some linguists call it the second hardest language to learn in the world, the first being English. OK, seriously, here is the big news: I GOT A SERIOUS BARREL LAST THURSDAY! I know some of you are laughing at me right now, especially the east coast contingent, but it was awesome! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I'm freaking out just thinking about it!! Follow me . . .

This is from the car on the way to LAX the other day. AMAZING!

THis is from the plane. Also AMAZING!

Also from the car!

Ok, I don't know this dude but I like this shot. This was taken the afternoon of the serious tube I got in the morning. Then I went to have lunch with Mike Ross and PJ Kelly--two geniuses--and then went back for another session at Gladstones in Malibu. Nobody was surfing this point and I had these waves to myself. Unbelievable. They are kicking me out of the coffee shop where I am right now, so no more about surfing right now.
