Ten years of the BV3K sound system
Ten years after making the whole world groove to Drinking in L.A. — and blowing people away with their first major live concert, at the Festival in 1997 — the Bran Van sound remains instantly recognizable from the first notes, in hits and faves like Afrodiziak, Couch Surfer and Astounded. And after absorbing and transforming rock, disco, dance, electro and R&B, they continue their musical evolution, bringing soul, funk and reggae grooves in their gorgeous latest release, Rosé.

James Di Salvio likes to say he’s had no formal musical training… but you’d never know it from the way he schooled the dance world! With Glee (1998), Discosis (2001) and Rosé (2007), Di Salvio and bandmates Hawley, Ian Fry, Nick Hynes and Gary McKenzie stamped the Bran Van 3000 groove on listeners around the world. But to truly understand this band — or rather, collective — they must be seen live in concert! Two Thousand and Great

I've recorded a record with Rob Balducci (see below), recorded most of my upcoming album and much much more. You can listen to my Latin HIT!--Wrestler--at My Space to listen.

As of the last month, I am by sponsored by the New York Minute Cycling Team. I compete 3 times a week in the Manhattan courier competitions. My best times have been born out of the 5th Avenue route from 86th to 28th for which I hit an award winning time of 13 minutes. The 7th Avenue leg which spans 34th to Warren Street was fruitful as well, in which I clocked in at 11 minutes. Time trials at best. I'm preparing for the Week-Before-Christmas Championship Final where dreams are broken, crowds are many and coffee breaks are few. I expect to ride up to 200 miles that week, a modest accomplishment, and rake in anywhere from 4 to 5 grand a day. At least that's where the Jackpot is at now. Tomorrow I will be taking a half day to rest my quads.

So I'm a bike courier now. 3 days a week. It's the coolest job ever. It's not even a job. I'm basically paid to race in NYC. It's making me fall in love with this city. I don't know if I will ever recover from her deep embrace. From my estimations, I'm doing somewhere from 25-35 miles a day. It's hardcore to say the least. I'm still a baby boy at the whole deal, street numbers are still fresh. I know 1270 Broadway is around 34th street and 500 5th Avenue is at 42nd street and that's it. I kid too much. It's been three weeks and I know a lot now. I go from top of midtown to downtown at least twice a day, sometimes four. I can get into almost any building. The view from the 49th floor of 30 Broad Street building is unbelievable: south tip of Manhattan and onward. I dart through traffic, shoot through cars on red lights, almost hit old ladies, get cursed at, and I get paid for it. I've wanted to write every day about it, because the occurrences are priceless. It's like the best movie ever. Yesterday was rough. Holiday season is starting to get heavy. Emotionally intense. The streets are seeping with it. 5th to 7th Avenues around Midtown at 5 PM was ridiculous. Cops had to tape off the sidewalks for every red light so pedestrians--blood still dripping from their holiday shopping bags--wouldn't just walk though the street without regards to the crossing signals. I see the same people over and over again. It's weird. You'd think the odds of repeated sightings would be low, but apparently not. Manhattan is quite small it seems. It is the center of the universe though so it's not so odd, I guess.

The sound was so good here, which made for a pretty great show. Of course, Eric Biondo was like, that sucked, blah blah blah. Whatever, it was fun as sheet.

This is my first solo-produced track and was co-produced and mixed by Ivan Evangelista at the Warren Street Studio in Downtown Manhattan. Without him, all radness would go under-noticed.

DANCE! will be finding it's way into a new Geoff Boothby film that will be premiered in the not-so-distant future as well as my debut album.

I just had one of the busiest weekends of my life. Friday: rehearsal, drive to New Haven for gig with Andy Friedman and the OTher Failures, drive back. Saturday: Recording session all day, drive to Woodstock for another show with The Failures, sleep at hippie commune. Sunday: drive back to Gotham for Gospel followed by rehearsal at night. I chilled out today, cleaned the house, made food and watched Heroes, a recommended TV series on evolving human potential. I'm playing bass for Jessica Vale when Matt St. Joseph can't. Amazing.

So it's been kinda long since a post--I've been in California, Mexico (you know the movie Predator? I was where they filmed that!!), now I'm back in NYC for a couple days and I go on tour with Andy Friedman for 10 days in the deep South!!!! Party. I have a junkload of media to show, I will be editing and compiling over the next several weeks, so stay tuned. I DID MY FIRST FRONTSIDE GRIND TODAY!!!! WooHoo. New level on Ian's REallife T&C Surf Skate Video Game.

So I just got into the homestead this morning, went to my fav restaurant Cholada/Thai Beach on PCH and who do I see about to come in? None other than the lovely Tia Carrera! My first and only reaction: rapid fist pumping and celebratory cheers of "Yes!" thrown subtly into the warm, noon-day sun. Perhaps my greatest dream had just been met: to visually meet a member of the best movie and contributor to over 90% of my vocabulary: Wayne's World. And finally, I must address my gratuitous use of the colon. There it is, I addressed it :)
