Friedman released his second album, Weary Things (City Salvage Records/Kindred Rhythm) in the winter of 2009, which garnered widespread critical praise, a performance on NPR's coveted Mountain Stage, and a feature interview on XM's Bob Edwards Show, further solidifying his growing reputation as a "dusty, paint-splattered Americana sage." (Rochester News & Democrat) Despite this, and along with only a handful of other albums (including releases by Tom Waits and Chuck Prophet) The Associated Press highlighted Weary Things among The Best Overlooked Albums Of 2009. "Friedman can write a lyric and deliver it," declared Stephen Wine. "He is not to be overlooked, that's for sure." Friedman's "hard-tack country originals" were described in The New Yorker as "the mark of a true artist," while NoDepression.com called his songwriting "unforgettable." Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor, in a poem written about Friedman's sophomore album, called his record a "certified, genuine American tune." Indie-folk icon Sufjan Stevens proclaimed, "I think the world of Andy Friedman. I've always wanted to be Andy Friedman." In the album’s liner notes, David Gates -- the author, Pulitzer-finalist, and former senior arts editor for Newsweek -- sets the tone for Weary Things. “What [Friedman] sees through his windshield isn’t Greil Marcus’s Old Weird America," he writes, "but the weird, new America where the pastoral is no longer pure.”
"Andy Friedman is not exactly one of those musicians you play while you're paying your bills or cleaning the house," says NPR, "his songs demand that you sit down and listen to them, which is why he is such a hot live act." While his songs are anything but funny, Friedman has published over a dozen gag cartoons in The New Yorker under the pseudonym Larry Hat. As an award-winning illustrator published under his own name, Friedman’s portraits of cultural figures appear regularly in literally hundreds of magazines and newspapers worldwide, including recent covers for the New York Times Magazine and The New Republic.

When Pachanga Latino Music Festival MVP Brian Lopez —at least the guitarist for Y La Orkestra, also performing at the festival, ought to be in contention for the title for pulling double duty in two wildly different acts — took a break from his solo set of classically inspired folk pop, he had one question for the audience.

“Why is everybody so far away? I know we’re from Arizona, but you can get closer,” quipped the Tucson musician. “We won’t bite.”

The answer, of course, had nothing to do with Lopez’s politically controversial home state and everything to do with the scorching early afternoon heat. Roasting temperatures punctuated by infrequent cloud cover meant a toasty start to Pachanga’s third year, keeping crowds thin for the first portion of the day. Lopez thoughtfully serenaded the criminally small early audience with a band that included Y La Orkestra leader Sergio Mendoza and a guest appearance from that band’s vocalist, Calexico collaborator Salvador Duran, whose contribution of whistling would put Andrew Bird to shame. Lopez sounded appropriately vulnerable and melancholic during his solo set, backed by a virtuoso band as he nailed “Praying for Rain” and a cover of “Leda Atomica” on the patio, by far Pachanga’s best-sounding stage. As with preceding act Pinata Protest — too few punk bands feature accordions — it was a shame more people weren’t there to see it.

But the beauty of the East Side’s verdant Fiesta Gardens is that — unlike inaugural Pachanga venue Waterloo Park — shade is never more than a few paces away, and crowds were appreciable if not acutely impressive on the pavilion stage, where Chicano legends Tortilla Factory blew through a loose, charming set heavy on appealing covers, from an energized take on the Gipsy Kings’ “Bamboleo” to a soulful “Stand By Me.” Original vocalist Bobby Butler remains an endearing stage presence, capable of blending English and Spanish, blues and tejano, with an ease unmatched by any other performer.

Cross-park Grupo Fantasma side project Brownout demonstrated why they’re the tightest, funkiest thing currently going in Austin, tearing into “Nawlins,” off last year’s game-changing “Aguilas Y Cobras.” Adrian Quesada took a moment to plug Grupo’s later show with legendary Fania Records producer Larry Harlow, calling him “why we do what we do.”

The tide turned and crowds thickened as the worst of the mid-afternoon heat passed. Tucson’s Y La Orkestra proved the major discovery of the festival, a sort of more avant, experimental (but equally expansive) Arizonan version of Grupo Fantasma — they’ve dubbed themselves “indie mambo,” which says it about as well as anything, really — with a killer lead vocalist in Salvador Duran. By the time Pilar Diaz took to the patio at 5 p.m., spinning a distinctly Latino take on twee indie-pop, Pachanga was properly hopping. The evening brought unlikely covers — David Garza taking on ZZ Top’s “Tush,” joyous all-female mariachi band Mariachi Las Altenas using a few bars of Kelis’ “Milkshake.” You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a mariachi croon “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.”

New York’s Pacha Massive brought feel-good world fusion to the Hierba stage as the sun set, with horn player Vince Veloso an unexpected treat — with four horns strapped to his person, and brandishing a flute like a samurai sword, Veloso was captivating even before playing a single note. San Antonio’s 60’s-evoking, Sir-Douglas-Quintet-by-way-of-Beach-Boys-harmonies rockers Hacienda ripped into songs off sophomore album “Big Red and Barbacoa,” proving themselves yet again one of the most exciting rock bands to come out of Central Texas in years. Hacienda have all the easy polish you’d expect of regular tour mates of Black Key Dan Auerbach, with good-natured banter with the audience and an effortless-appearing mastery of their instruments.

The “trendy and buzzed Latino act” slot that last year served Mexican Institute of Sound went to Bomba Estereo this year, and they were an equally ideal headliner to fetch the attentions of the younger, more dance-inclined festivalgoers even as tejano legend Roberto Pulidio provided more professional, family-friendly fare on the main pavilion stage. Bomba Estereo’s cumbia-with-a-modern-twist formula makes for engaging listening, all the more so under the direction of firebrand vocalist Liliana Saumet. Saumet’s often compared to M.I.A. or Santigold, but that’s not fair — she’s significantly better live than either, and as the crowd jumped along to infectious dance tune “Fuego” it was clear that Pachanga’s meticulous good sense in sussing out which international bands to book was as on target as ever.

There remain chinks to be ironed out in the still-growing festival, but from choice of venue to booking sense Pachanga defined itself yet again one of Austin’s musical events most worthy of watching. Bring on number four.

Ever wonder what Amplified Heat's skuzzy Texas blues would taste like bottled and distilled? The local power trio has its own Big Daddy's Hot Sauce (Mean Smokin' Green Hot Sauce), whose smoked jalapeño flavor perfectly complements the Ortiz brothers' classic Red River shuffle on 2007's How Do You Like the Sound of That (Arclight). – Austin Powell

Tortilla Factory was way ahead of the game as a mixed-race 1970s Chicano soul outfit performing across the country. Four decades later, they're essentially a family band, still led by the legendary Tony "Ham" Guerrero and still pumping out exuberant, nonstop pop, rock, and soul. Guerrero and original vocalist Bobby Butler reunited in 2008 for All That Jazz, nominated in 2009 for Best Tejano Album in the Latin Grammys. – Margaret Moser

Like the J.B.'s to James Brown or Mr. Hyde to Dr. Jekyll, Brownout is the mostly instrumental alter ego of Grupo Fantasma. Once regarded as either warm-up or an after-hours wind-down to the main attraction, the eightpiece ensemble has gained near-equal footing thanks to last year's sophomore stunner, Aguilas and Cobras (Six Degrees), a surreal collection of Latin funk jams that features contributions from members of White Denim and Hacienda. – Austin Powell

Formerly of Neil Young's Vapor Records' rockers Los Abandoned, Danny Elfman collaborator, and onetime Bulgarian choirista, Díaz remains her own cottage industry of multicultural/-dimensional voz. – Raoul Hernandez

Good mariachi music strikes you in the chest. Such is the case with San Anotnio's ninepiece Mariachi las Alteñas. Awing last year's Pachanga gathering, the musically astute ensemble not only delivers instrumentally, its all-female vocals are as rich and robust as any of its male counterparts, with the added pleasure of razor-sharp harmonies. ¡Sí, señora! – Belinda Acosta

Last year's unofficial Pachanga emcee, David Garza returns for another festival match of Six Degrees from Dah-veed. In addition to last year's Twang Twang Shock-a-Boom reunion, Shed Light, Garza's free best-of from his new millennial digital archives, just hit MP3, and he's begun recording a follow-up to 2008 mainstream comeback Dream Delay. It may seem like an elitist, overly civic-minded thing to say, but if you weren't in Montreal in 1997 to witness Bran Van 3000's shattering of the glass ceiling that seemed to block so many local bands in that dreary decade, then you truly can't comprehend how this collective of poets, artists, rappers and musicians represented a new horizon for a city that seemed well on its way to oblivion.

Two years removed from a vitriolic sovereignty referendum — where the underlying feelings of resentment that permeated from both sides came out in the wash — businesses were leaving the city left and right, and most anglophones couldn't wait to pack their belongings and head down Highway 20 to the 401. Then came Bran Van 3000's 1997 debut album, Glee, which remains the closest anyone has ever gotten to a party on a disc. It had lyrics in both English and French and signalled the worst was over and the healing process was ready to begin. In these more optimistic days, Bran Van 3000 and others deserve credit for getting us through the rough patches.

Much like how the Bran Van 3000 extended family can all go their separate ways, yet congregate at the raising of some telepathic bat signal, more than 100,000 Montrealers, tourists and fans felt their party senses tingling and simply knew to show up to this monumental event.

Beginning with ex-Doughboys frontman John Kastner on guitar, vocalists Sara Johnston and Jayne Hill (the only members beyond BV3 mastermind James Di Salvio to appear on 2001's Discosis) performed "I Won't Lie" from 2007's Rose and "Speed" from Discosis before Di Salvio enthusiastically jumped in, thanked the crowd and broke into full party-rap mode. They all looked ageless, as if they had spent the last 10 years relaxing on a tropical beach, getting their batteries charged just for this performance. Even the material from Rose sounded much better live, and it flowed seamlessly with Discosis' electronic/world music flourishes and Glee's anarchic, structureless hip-hop. The rapping on the French "Forest" and the English "Afrodiziak" exemplified the fun nature of early Bran Van as they mixed all three albums in a series of medleys.

As with any massive, outdoor jazz fest show, the sound doesn't carry well down Sainte-Catherine Street, and most people settled for an obstructed view of the stage. It didn't deter fans from going absolutely ballistic when the 13-piece group (which featured what appeared to be a lot of old jazz guys) jumped into "Astounded," with bassist Gary McKenzie singing the Curtis Mayfield parts to near perfection. This was the first time the group were playing the Discosis songs live, yet they sounded surprisingly familiar. The back-to-back playing of Glee's haunting Jayne Hill-led ballad "Everywhere" and the legendary "Drinking In L.A." inspired the crowd to sing along and wave their arms en masse. Ex-Me, Mom And Morgentaler frontwoman Kim Bingham and rapper Steve "Liquid" Hawley brought endless energy as the stage became progressively more and more filled with familiar faces.

Eleven years after proving a Montreal band didn't need to mimic their Canadian and American counterparts to achieve success, Bran Van 3000 still serve a purpose beyond nostalgia. During their hiatus, fans would speak glowingly about how a Bran Van 3000 concert was a guaranteed party. With so many young outsiders coming to Montreal for an inexpensive college education, it was always hard to explain the aura surrounding the group. After this reunion show in Montreal, it's safe to say the legend lives on and will hopefully continue to grow.

As of the last month, I am by sponsored by the New York Minute Cycling Team. I compete 3 times a week in the Manhattan courier competitions. My best times have been born out of the 5th Avenue route from 86th to 28th for which I hit an award winning time of 13 minutes. The 7th Avenue leg which spans 34th to Warren Street was fruitful as well, in which I clocked in at 11 minutes. Time trials at best. I'm preparing for the Week-Before-Christmas Championship Final where dreams are broken, crowds are many and coffee breaks are few. I expect to ride up to 200 miles that week, a modest accomplishment, and rake in anywhere from 4 to 5 grand a day. At least that's where the Jackpot is at now. Tomorrow I will be taking a half day to rest my quads.

It's sooooo cold these days. Not the worst ever, but bad enough when you're trekking the city everyday. Yesterday, my UV-glasses were freezing my head off. So basically, skating bowls is not happening right now. But, I've focused my power into learning how to olie and go over stuff, mainly curbs. Keep in mind, I suck. I'm just getting olies down at my age. Wtf? But, I must say, to go from not being able to consistently get off the ground to actually making it over curbs has made me feel like I can go out of this life a happy man.

Today, Saturday was nice. Just chillin, takin care of business, playin music, skatin, eatin, sippin cardamon espresso. A comfy winter weekend in the ultimate month of 2007.

And!!! The Drum Show on KRUU FM is still poppin. 5 to 6 PM Central Standard Time every Sunday is the jam.

I just had one of the busiest weekends of my life. Friday: rehearsal, drive to New Haven for gig with Andy Friedman and the OTher Failures, drive back. Saturday: Recording session all day, drive to Woodstock for another show with The Failures, sleep at hippie commune. Sunday: drive back to Gotham for Gospel followed by rehearsal at night. I chilled out today, cleaned the house, made food and watched Heroes, a recommended TV series on evolving human potential. I'm playing bass for Jessica Vale when Matt St. Joseph can't. Amazing.

So I just got into the homestead this morning, went to my fav restaurant Cholada/Thai Beach on PCH and who do I see about to come in? None other than the lovely Tia Carrera! My first and only reaction: rapid fist pumping and celebratory cheers of "Yes!" thrown subtly into the warm, noon-day sun. Perhaps my greatest dream had just been met: to visually meet a member of the best movie and contributor to over 90% of my vocabulary: Wayne's World. And finally, I must address my gratuitous use of the colon. There it is, I addressed it :)

Whoa, it's been a long time. How have you been? I've been very busy, oh, you too? That's great! No, no surfing lately. I wish. Skateboarding though. I think I'm going to name my first born Powerslide. If it's a girl? That is the girl. A boy would be called Railgrind. Haha, just kidding. No really, since the last time we talked, I started playing out with the Rob Balducci Band. I just got back from Texas--I love Texas--and now I'm starting phase 20 my world domination plan. No, like the really good let's all listen to Marley and rap world domination. Here's a movie. I promise to get together one that has a camera on my bass drum foot the whole time. I PROMISE!

Yeah! I was naked, crazy right? No really I was wearing a Speedo. And flippers.

So here are some new vids of me on my quest for rockskatedom. I watched Thrashin' the other day and I immediately became obsessed with powerslides upon seeing Gator Rogowski doing these things at 20-30 mph on Encinal Canyon Road.

Also, I went skating yesterday for my BDay and learned a lot. I still majorly suck at bowl riding but it's getting better. This is more of an educational video for me rather than a showcase of my skilz. I also figured out how to break a leg while skating. Just put a lot of pressure on a straight leg in the right position and a bone will snap. Now I know what not to do. And no I didn't break a leg. I just figured out HOW to do it.

This is the Pier 26 bowl that they moved to 34th Street and 12th Ave just above the heliport in Manhattan, where I skated today. They disassembled this one and put it back together with a 7 foot bowl connected to a 12 foot deep end. A little bit different than the picture.

So, I skated my first swimming pool/bowl today. It was a huge occurrence for me because the reason I got so into this whole deal was to carve the walls of a dry swimming pool as per the Dogtown and Zboyz gang. You gotta go back to the roots and start where it all began, me thinks. I definitely suck, but that is a good thing, because then I can enjoy the growth even more than if I was Tony Alva right off the bat. At first it was just me figuring out the whole spiel, and then some dudes showed up and it got rocking. What I was so stoked about was the drop-in that I was able to do practically every time. It was about 3 feet bigger than what I was used to. Before I was doing 4 foot quarter pipe drop ins, and this thing was around 7! After I saw a dude do it, I just walked up to the ledge, visualized the nature of the drop and went for it. Cracks me up every time because the mind can get you so tied up into this state of suspension that keeps you from doing anything and when you let it all go and just act, it flows naturally. Anyways, Eastern Phil lesson aside, it was rad. And then, on my last run, I totally fell on the drop and added to my bloody knee collection. Oh, by the way, the leg is healed, so expect a collage of the daily healing process in the next few days.

I finally did it! I bought an oldskool drum module. Now I get to sound like drummers from the best era on the face of the planet: the early 90s! FYI, once I hook this baby up to my live drum setup, I'm going straight for the 808 on the bass drum and hand claps on the snare. Watch out. I'll post some samples of nastiness within the next 2 weeks.

Also, FYI, if you're wondering about the title of this entry, my browser seems to be partial to devanagri script. For those of you, be it few, who don't read sanskrit, it reads: "Look what . . ."

You guessed it! Hill Bombin skills or hospital bills! I took an unfortunate yet thrilling fall while running into a pretty hefty gravel patch at high speeds the other day. Definitely a good learning experience as well as an ironic slap in the face that my injuries would have been reduced perhaps by 90% if I had adorned the proper safety gear that I had purchased not more than a day before. Funny, huh? Not haha funny, though.

The tour went wonderfully well. This is probably the tightest the Andy Friedman roadshow has ever been. For the last 3 days, it has been four piece plus Paul Curreri, monster musician/finger-picking guitar extraordinaire. A highlight came while I was reclined on a street bench outside of the Hunter-Gatherer in Columbia, SC where I was mistaken by the cops for a 17 year-old runaway. I had the whole bar rooting for me, but it only went so far that 10 people hit the streets to help my cause before the fuzz realized that I was a mature 24 year old in town on business. Yes, very mature.

Now, Andy, Greg Donahue, Caleb Stine, and myself are held up in the Curreri-Sproule household to record a new record. As I type, I hold a 1950s toy guitar in my hand after having an enlightening lesson with Paul. It's been raining today. The house overlooks the Thomas Jefferson's Monticello residence, even though the mist engulfed it for most of the afternoon.

So I've been getting into skateboarding lately. I've realized that it so very close to surfing and being in New York City, I need some kind of experience that reminds me of home and is functional. Originally for my transportation around the city, skateboarding has turned into an amazing way for me to push the limits that I place on myself as well as experience the growth that takes place when one focuses on mastering a task. Blah Blah Blah, no really, this is so much fun. I went to my first skate park yesterday on 103st on the Upper West side and began to learn the way of the half pipe.

Being on the road is enlightening in many ways: one that comes to mind immediately being the fact that NYC is not the center of the world as illustrated above by the New Yorker. Right now, Minneapolis is the center, in two hours it will be Madison.

So Al Gore won the Oscar. That was fun. But I'm having doubts about him running for prez. Don't think its gonna happen. Would be cool, but I think he doesn't want to eff with all the BS. I wouldn't. I'd get all emo and spend my time in a room with burgandy shades pulled with a glass of brandy by my side, lamenting the weight of the world that I had so wantonly taken upon my now weary shoulders.

Did you watch 24 tonight? It's weird how it parallels present day society and the darkness of politics. Let's just leave it at that. By the way, speaking of dark: Dick Cheney. Wooo, what a man. You have to love him. You just have to. If you can't show that dude the compassion and love that you say you have, then we're all up the creek. Plus, he needs it. Do you think he's stoked? I don't know, maybe he is and that's great, but it looks to me like he's waiting to start over.

A New Era

Hello again! Sorry it's been so long. I actually can't believe it has been so long since the last post. You all probably think I'm traumatized or something. Well, I'm not. I am very tired though. Life is CRAAZY! I just moved up to Queens, the Brooklyn of the Future I have come to call it due to the impending construction of 6-8 high rise buildings in downtown Brooklyn. I don't know how I feel about that but I guess it is the way of the world.

Speaking about ways of the world, I've been saying it for a week or two, but I think Al Gore is going to be known as President Al Gore in several years. Did you read the Rolling Stone Article? That was what Tippe(r)d it off. He not only has a serious chance, but history is on his side: two presidents in the past have lost the electoral college while winning the popular vote while following up with a presidential win the subsequent year. In this case, Gore would have lost said election, made an Oscar Award winning documentary, and THEN go on to win the hardest game in the history of the world. I'm just ready for someone who gives a motherf*#% about what matters most: the environment. I overheard someone say, "If he runs solely on the global warming thing, that's, like, totally lame . . . like." Ok, so they didn't say all the "likes", but it makes their argument sound way lamer, right? No, but seriously, what better issue to concentrate on than SAVING THE WORLD?!?!?!

-BUT, Ian. Issues such as homelessness, abortion, gross national deficit, and immigration should not be thrown to the wind so easily by you! And you call yourself a . . .

AND that's when the gunshot earmuffs go ON. I watch TV now and while witnessing such learned programs such as The O'Reilly Factor, Scarborough Country, and The Colbert Report, I feel like the next hot show is just going to be this severely left or right political commentator with a bull horn and gunmuffs on all the time. It would be hilarious. He would get people like Anne Coulter, Al Franken and Ed Bagley Jr. all together, let them go at it, and spout his rhetoric whenever he felt prone to it. Beautiful.

This is fun. Writing I mean. I'm going to stop and leave some for next month when I update the blog again. JUST KIDDING! I'll do it sooner than that. Like next week. JUST KIDDING again! Sooner, more regularer. Check back soon!

Today was a good day. Got up early, went to Church, played some Gospel. You know, a classic Sunday in New York. And then I got in a gang fight in Harlem. Weeeeeeeeeeeeee! Four weeks in NYC: haven’t seen ground zero but played some 8 on 1 “fuck-wid-the-white-boy.” Check that off the list!
No seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?!?!!!! Who does this shit anymore? Riding around with Officers Lassic and Ma in the Police Wagon looking for black kids? So unnecessary yet I was doing it just today! I felt like Andrew Jackson in 18-fucking-58. Excuse my fluent French, but I’m a little shook up.
So here’s the story: I’m working out on the staircases in St. Nicholas Park and these smiling kids run up to my stuff which I had so conveniently placed in broad daylight, and take my phone from my jacket pocket. They just took it! So, I did what anyone other self-empowered 24 year-old would do: RUN AFTER THEM! You see, I was just going to talk to them. That’s right! Talk to them. “ Hey guys, what’s going on? Oh, cool you took my phone, that’s awesome. Go Bears!”
“Fwat-fwat-fwat!” Went three or four fists on the back of my head. “I’m in it now,” I thought. In 7 seconds we went from visiting to paddy-cake. And then they got shy and ran away. “Come on you guys, give it back!” I yelled. One of them had so cordially stayed behind. “What did they take?” He asked. “My phone. Can you help me get it back.” “Sure, but they won’t give it.” Begin walking forward and BLAM! Tag, you’re it on my right ear. This is when the fun begins. One of the 7 in front of me takes off down the hill for the rest of my stuff including a large cymbal bag, my notebook full of top secret launch codes, and my jackets (plural due to arctic air) with wallet. I sprint after the little girl and just as he reaches my stuff, I push him over to buy time so I can make a getaway. At this point, if Jack Bauer were here . . . wait, if Jack Bauer were here, he would either a) be accompanied by 2-9mms with 11 round clips each and therefore our story would have not progressed past the opening pleasantries, b) congratulated me for taking down 1 out of 8 bogeys, formidable yet not good enough for the Drazen mission, or c) punched me in the throat and called me dirty names in Spanish. Mmmmmmmmmm, c. So, having bought myself about 1.5 seconds, so happened the most touching moment of the past 3 minutes: perp #2, 5’7”, black beanie hat, blue jacket with 2 black layers underneath, pock-marked rotund cheeks, jeans (maybe) and whitesnake hitops (ok I made that one up)--as I described in the police report--stops in front of me, we lock eyes—time stops—he opens his mouth--I take a deep breath—he blinks and says: “You just pushed my nigga.” Awwwwww, sweetie! Let’s do it again! [Begin Tchaik’s Romeo et Juliet] He stops, I feign, take a deep breath, he blinks [record screeches to a halt]. Ok, it wasn’t that good. Bam! Perp #1 knocks me--AGAIN--in the back of the head—I guess they knew I had my face shots to do tonight. I have a revelation: run away!! [Jack’s throat shot really hurts now and begins to swell] I pick up my 40 pound bag of metal from the church gig [An common question I get when telling of my Gospel gig: “Is Harlem safe?” “Sure! It’s great now!”], and take off down the hill. Perp #1 or #2, I can’t tell, swipes my legs out from underneath me. When usually this wouldn’t phase me, the metal tells me otherwise. Everything goes flying, launch codes, Peruvian yacket and all as I recreate a scene from the family classic, Waterslide in the Backyard. Bam Bam Bam, more playful pats on the head. Dickface #19 takes my jacket and--unbeknownst to him--my wallet. “Noooooooooooo,” I whisper to myself. “Now the shire will never be safe.” Moments pass. The world stops on its axis. “Why?” With a grin, DF#19 drops the cash, and winks. “Was that a wink?” I asked myself in awe. He knew! He knew I couldn’t live without my 3 credit cards and 2 debit cards and gift card to BebopJeans.com! What a nice guy! Thanks Dickface. You’re the best. You see?! Harlem IS a safe place!

Band Camp and Beyond

I just arrived back in New York after a week in Fairfield, Iowa where if you build it, they will come. It was a fruitful week of playing with Jonnie and Gemma Cohen--two members of a band we like to call Laser Focus. Together we played organ, sitar, tabla. . .everything! I bought a bass guitar. I played with a Bansuri flute master. I played drums in a futon shop during the monthly Art Walk. I taught drums. Band Camp on every level.

Having come from a relaxing week with friends in the Midwest, I hit the ground running. Gospel rehearsal yesterday, playing for preschoolers this morning, country band rehearsal tonight: I realized that I am living my dream RIGHT NOW. No longer waiting for some future moment of accomplishment, I am absolutely happy living the life I have chosen. Wonderfully, this all came to me while playing a chug-a-chug-a train beat with Andy Friedman and his country band. Amazing.

The Strand

This morning, I paddled out at the infamous Silver Strand in Oxnard--known for its amazing waves given its prime location in between the wave-blocking path of the Channel Islands as well for its ramant localism up until the late 90s--feeling eager to catch some perfect waves. There has been some hefty North Pacific storms that have pushed some god sized swell our way. Coupled with the morning offshore winds, the outcome is as you see above, perfectly shaped waves with spitting barrels: exactly what I had dreamt. I was with my buddy whom I have known since our days at the Growing Place pre-school. I felt ready to hit the surf, he was wary of the oversized waves we were paddling into. I felt ready and in-shape with just the right amount of gutsiness. We both had not surfed since Thanksgiving yet our perceived readiness of our impending session varied greatly.

The water smelled like goat waste. Great. I didn't care. Most of Southern California coast line carried this aroma after a rain. As we paddled out, I felt the power of the ocean as each wave held me back from my destination of sitting past the breakers. It took perhaps 10 minutes and when we got there, I lay flat on my yellow thruster in temporary exhaustion, all the while, mountains of energy peaked and broke around me. I could not fathom taking off on one of these perfect A-frames just yet. The paddle out itself had taken a toll.

The weight of the situation began to dawn on me. It fell on me instantly as I paddled for a peak and looked over a drop that quickly grew to a vertical precipice. This wasn't a longboard wave like Surfrider where you could leisurely drop in and and cut down the line. This was solely a short board wave that jacked up in no time where only a calculated fall into the slot would then lead you into a rushing pit of 50 degree water with a lip of water curling over your bent head. Ok, I thought, wake up. Let's get serious. As I sat in the moving water, waves crashing on the jetty 40 feet to my west, peaks lining and jacking up continuously, I felt my grand influence in the Pacific Ocean: nothing.

A dolphin swam by. Beautiful, glistening monsters strolled into shore. Every take off on a wave was met by the cool, brisk swap of the windswept water in my face. I was humbled. No longer a surfrider who had come to conquer the waves and prove his worth, but a man who is here to witness the awesome power and cold beauty of the ocean.

Something very interesting happened the other day. I answered a Craig'slist posting, and I got a call back about it. Ok, not so interesting yet, but what if I said that MTV was the caller. More interesting, yes. TRL? Now you see. The caller, Jennifer, told me that I would be one of 3 drummers who would audition to play with the band Plus 44--Blink 182+1--on TRL, this Friday. Whoa! The deal was that Travis Barker-drummer-hurt his hand and they were going to do some spiel where the lucky drummer (i.e. me) plays with Plus 44 on the song "When your heart stops beating," and then Travis comes up, we trade pleasantries, and he goes up and rocks it with one good left hand and and snare trigger on his left foot. Genius idea, right? Well, it got canned and it isn't happening. Major bummer? Well no. It got me pretty psyched up to be a rock star and I got into ultra-super-duper-Jack-Bauer practice mode, plus TRL is keeping my info for future showcases. All in all, +plus+ sign for me! Oh, and this picture(s) is amazing.
